Thanks so much to John Ogilbee (Custom Trumpet Designer/Builder)

My friend, Sean-David, started The Tuned In Academy and now he’s working hard to release his book. Go to his website, learned about his work and how he’s cultivating music and art. Instead of buying lunch today, donate $20 to his kickstart fundraiser so he can publish his book. This world needs more guys like Sean-David and I was happy to contribute.- John Ogilbee

Thanks so much to John Ogilbee for the kind words and for the support! John is a gifted and generous custom trumpet designer who crafts beautiful horns (in look and sound) and is also the official US distributor for Taylor Trumpets. John was generous in supporting both the publication of The Tuned In Musician and a scholarship for a trumpet player to study privately at the academy. We so appreciate his generosity, artistry, heart, and service to musicians everywhere. If you know trumpet players considering a new purchase, or wanting custom work, check out his Facebook page for pictures and drop him a line; humbled by your support John.

Remembering Brubeck, More than Mere Entertainer

We lost one of the world’s finest musicians today, but Dave Brubeck was more than a mere entertainer.

Dave Brubeck was most definitely a musician of the finest capabilities. He composed luscious lines of melody and harmony, stacked powerful chords, and created vast rhythmic content that displays just a taste of the complexities of the infinite source of all rhythm. Beyond this however, Brubeck realized that being a musician meant more than simply music, and more than simply entertaining people with music.

Brubeck tuned in to the community with his music. The New York Times obituary for Brubeck observes just a few important examples of how Brubeck tuned in, beyond himself, beyond music as mere entertainment, and in to the needs of others and fostering community among a people.

Brubeck wrote about justice, racial divide, and even death, through musical lament.

The world is not in a shortage of musicians of stellar speakability and technical excellence, but the world is in need of musicians and composers that can and will use their speakability to tune in beyond themselves and in to the needs of others. The world needs more musicians that tune in to community. Let us celebrate and honor the music of Dave Brubeck as we remember the gift he left us with, but let’s also remember and take an example from him. He not only taught us that 5/4 can swing, but that music, even jazz music, can and should do more than just swing; music can and should also speak to the needs of others as well.

I Want to Hear from You

I would love to hear from you: musicians, artists, and creative communicators. The book is near completion, but if I don’t get to it in this book I can always cover it in a future edition and would love to cover it here on the blog.
What are some of the key areas of deep concern (matters of the heart/spirit and mind) that you have as an artist?

What are some of the frustrations or fears that you have in practice or presentation?

Do you have concerns, questions, or frustrations that you have about writing/composing?

Are there life issues that you just don’t know how to process as an artist?

We all have them. My hope is to create an environment where we can discuss them openly.

Feel free to drop me a line using the contact form here, send me an email at info@tunedinmusician.com, or post it here on the blog. Make sure I get your name and contact info, If I use your suggestions or questions in the book I will ensure you are credited in the text and get you a copy.

Thanks and stay Tuned in!
